PTI Inspection Systems announces its latest industry driven technological development to advance the capabilities of package testing ASTM D6653-13.

Maintaining package integrity is as much a function of the package seal quality, as how the package interacts during its intended use.  In transport, packages are subject to a variety of impacts and environmental effects.  PTI’s latest VeriPac 400 Series Models 415 and 425 have been reengineered to provide the most sensitive, accurate, and practical solution to altitude testing.  Operating in accordance with ASTM D6653-13 “Standard Test Method for Determining the Effects of High Altitude on Packaging Systems by Vacuum Method”, the test system offers accurate control of the package conditioning and precise monitoring throughout the process.  The VeriPac system can identify burst seals, leaks, and other integrity defects generated from altitude related package stress during the test, identifying the exact time and pressure of a package failure.

“The VeriPac testers are engineered for dual capability of both highly sensitive leak detection and altitude testing,” stated Oliver Stauffer, vice president/COO of PTI.  “They can switch from the standard vacuum decay mode to the altitude mode in less than one minute.  The standard vacuum decay mode is in accordance with ASTM F2338-09 and is capable of detecting package integrity defects and leaks as small as 5 microns, non-destructively.   Switching the system over to the altitude test mode provides similar leak detection capabilities, combined with the testing needs of the ASTMD6653-13.  The system does not compromise on any capabilities, providing leading sensitivity for non-destructive leak detection and the world’s most reliable altitude challenge system.”

Testing the effects of high altitude on packaging is needed across all packaging markets (pharmaceutical, medical device and food applications).  This test method determines the effects of pressure differential when packaged products are transported via certain modes of transport, such as freight aircraft or ground over high mountain passes. The results of these tests are intended are quantitative, providing added information and detail to the altitude test that was traditionally purely qualitative.
