When it comes to packaging and delivering medical tools such as vials, syringes, and catheters, it is incredibly important that sterility is maintained. For packaging manufacturers working in the medical fields or the makers of such medical devices, checking the integrity of both packaging and the devices themselves is paramount.
Leak testing is one of the most effective ways of ensuring that packaging is safely sealed and that the contents can remain sterile and safe for use.
Leak testing methods for vials, syringes and catheters
There is a wide range of leak testing methods that can be employed when it comes to ensuring the efficacy of medical equipment such as catheters, vials and syringes. Here are a few of the most common and a few of the applications they typically excel in.
Pressure decay leak testing
The pressure decay method is an efficient way of checking for micro leaks. It can be used in situations where a vacuum decay leak test isn’t possible, and it is frequently used for checking the integrity of empty and pre-filled syringes as well as liquid filled and lyophilized vials. It’s essential that syringes and vials are completely sealed and that their contents are protected from the adverse effects that can be caused by exposure to air, such as the ingress of bacteria and other threats to sterility, which is why pressure decay testing is essential for medical packaging.
Vacuum decay leak testing
Operating in a manner that’s essentially the inverse of the pressure decay method, this leak test works by placing a device or component within a test chamber, and vacuum or extract the air surrounding the object. The pressure within the chamber is then checked and if it has increased, then the item being tested has a leak. It is essential that syringes are sealed and do not let air in or the contents out. Vacuum decay testing is good for assessing nonporous, rigid or flexible packages for medical devices as well as the devices themselves.
Flow test method
This type of leak test measures the rate at which air is flowing or passing through a part and it is often used for testing medical tubing such as those used in catheters. The part being tested is pressurized and then clean, dry air is pushed through while the flow test measuring instrument measures the flow rate and how much air is needed to maintain internal pressure. The more air needed, the bigger the leak.
