Differences between film applicators (and what they are used for)

Understand the differences between film applicators

Film applicators are essential for testing the properties of a wide range of coatings, paints, cosmetics and more. They are a crucial part of the testing process and are used to prepare the samples which can then be thoroughly examined. So how do you find the one that suits your set up?

What are film applicators used for?

When you need to test films, it’s important to know that your samples have been applied in a uniform way. This allows you to create reliable and repeatable test conditions and be confident in your results. To achieve this uniformity of application, you need an accurate film applicator. Once films have been applied, it’s easy to test them for thickness, strength and many more factors.

What are the differences between film applicators?

Film applicators come in both manual and automatic varieties. Manual applicators require the tester to physically push and apply the film while automatic machines take the user out of the equation. There are also variations in the ways that different applicators apply films.

Baker film applicators have four precision specified coating thickness sizes to choose from, are made from hardened stainless steel and have a rounded design. They’re suitable for applying a wide range of different products onto flat and relatively solid substrates and can be used in both manual and automatic settings. Our Baker applicators offer film widths of 60mm, 80mm, 100mm and 150mm and gap depths of 15 to 200 µm.

Bird type applicators have a flat-edged prismatic body, which differs from the rounded body of the Baker, but they work in a similar way. They can be used in both manual and automatic tests and our 4-sided Bird-type applicators are available in film widths of 50mm, 60mm, 75mm, 80mm, 100mm and 150mm.

There are also spiral bar coaters that work differently to film applicators, but which can also be used to apply films and coatings. They use a cylindrical bar that has been wound with stainless steel wire. The product to be tested moves through the wire when it’s drawn across the substrate.

Automatic film applicator testing solutions

Whether you’re using the Baker or Bird-type methods, an automatic film applicator can simplify the process. The TQC Sheen Automatic Film Applicator offers a reliable way to apply coating films to test charts, panels or foils. Available in both standard and heated versions, this handy applicator will ensure that you can quickly and easily test a huge range of samples. By eliminating issues caused by the introduction of human factors and errors, it offers repeatable and consistent results.

Our TQC Sheen film applicator is also designed to make its application conforming to ASTM D823, which sets out the standard practices for producing films of uniform thickness of paint, coatings and related products on test panels.
