- Close off the outlet diameter of the funnel
- Fill the funnel by pouring in a set volume of the material, for example using an ASTM D1895 funnel which has a volume of 115 cm3.
- Open the bottom of the funnel
- Let the material freely pour into the measuring cup.
- After the material has all passed through the funnel
- Immediately scrape off the excess on the top of the measuring cup with a straight edge
- Do not shake the cup
- Weigh the material in the cup
- Calculate the weight in grams of 1 cm3 of the material to obtain the apparent bulk density of the material
